As we noted yesterday, autoimmune disorders are caused by a dysfunctional immunre response. The response is directed against the body's own tissues--that is, the body actually attacks its own tissues and organs. This can often lead to perpetual, multisystem impairments that will differ in clinical manifestations, course, and outcomes.
There are several listed disorders in the Listing of Impairments. These include systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic vasculitis, systemic sclerosis, polymyositis and dermatomyositis, inflammatory arthritis, and Sjogren's syndrome.
In order to establish that a person has an immune disorder, generally, that person must present a medical hisotry that includes physical examination, laboratory findings, and appropriate medical imaging or tissue biopsy reports that demonstrate the disorder. The SSA will rely heavily on these medical reports and will work to obtain a clear picutre of the claimant's medical disorder.
