Alcohol Detectors Could Come Standard With A New Car

A bill in the California legislature will require the installation of an interlock-type device that will test for blood alcohol content ("BAC") before the driver is allowed to start the car. The instrument would be calibrated to a .03 percent blood alcohol level. To prevent cheating, the bill will require the instrument to measure the drivers BAC while they are actually driving, as well. The bill will make available $60 million over the next five years to develop devices to measure the driver's BAC by touching the steering wheel or an ignition button.
