Police arrested a man in Midland, Texas last week for felony DWI and assault. The suspect was not only found to be drunk behind the wheel, but to also have assaulted several members of his family and a nurse. This is not the first time that 36-year-old J.M. has been in police custody. In fact, this was the third time that he was detained for driving while intoxicated. The Midland Police Department received several 911 phone calls last week about a public disturbance that was believed to be domestic violence related. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered that the suspect had become severely intoxicated and started attacking members of his own family. He then got into his car and drove away to an unknown destination.
Shortly after police were able to track down J.M. and confirmed that he was indeed intoxicated. In addition to reeking of alcohol and having reddened eyes, he was slurring his words and could not maintain his balance. He was taken into custody and charged with third-degree felony DWI for having three or more arrests on his record, as well as a misdemeanor charge of assault. When police believe that you are DWI, they will look for signs of intoxication before having you take a
breath test or perform
field sobriety tests. As this story shows, signs of intoxication are slurred speech, red eyes, and smelling of alcohol.
