UCLA Recruit Arrested on a Charge of Evading Arrest

S. Jamabo, a Plano West High School star football player, and perhaps the most sought-after college recruit in the United States was arrested on Saturday on a charge of evading arrest. Records show that he was speeding and ran through a stop sign before pulling his vehicle over.

At around 7:20 p.m., Jamabo was driving a Ford pickup and got off State Highway 175 while driving at a high rate of speed. An officer tried to pull Jamabo over, but instead he blew through a stop sign and turned onto State Highway 274, according to Kemp Police Chief Robert Walker.

As the truck swerved and sped past other vehicles, Walker said that the occupants threw objects out of the windows, having a total disregard for public safety and the other motorists.

Jamabo eventually stopped the truck and stepped out of the vehicle per the officer’s instructions.

The passengers included a 19-year-old male, an 18-year-old female, and a juvenile. They were detained and cited for being minors in possession of alcohol and for minor consumption of alcohol. They have not been identified by the police.

Jamabo, Plano West Senior High School’s running back and UCLA recruit, was arrested and booked into the Kaufman County jail for evading arrest.

Walker said that because there was a bottle of alcohol, there is a possibility of drunk driving. When asked why Jamabo didn’t perform field sobriety tests or take a breathalyzer test, Walker said that all of that information would be in the report.

On Sunday around 4:30 p.m. Jamabo posted a $7,500 bond.

Josh Rupprecht, UCLA’s associate athletic director said that the team was “aware” of Jamabo’s arrest. He said that UCLA is concerned about the reports and are in the process of gathering information. This is a continuing process and they will withhold further comment until the appropriate time, said Rupprecht.
