Explosions Rock Chemical Supplier North of Houston

On Friday (Aug. 14), a series of explosions at an oil field chemical supply company north of Houston, set a blaze that sent a dense column of thick, black smoke across the blue skies.

According to DrillChem, fortunately no one was in the plant located about 40 miles north of Houston. The blaze erupted at about 4:30 p.m. and authorities said that as far as they knew, no one was injured in the explosions or the fire.

It took firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control, NBC News reported.

The facility was empty at the time of the fire, so the company is thankful that no one was injured, said DrillChem CEO Brandon Hayes in a statement. Hayes said that they are working closely with the local authorities to determine the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.

Responding to the scene were units from several fire departments along with a hazardous materials team.

Residents who lived up to two miles from the fire were asked to stay indoors. By nightfall, the alert was reduced to a half-mile radius before it was completely lifted around 7:30 p.m.

Air monitors were set up to check the air for toxic pollutants, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency was notified, said Conroe Fire Marshal Mike Legoudes.

One resident, W. Patterson, who lives less than a mile from the plant, told The Conroe Courier that he stepped from his back door with his dogs when he saw a huge black cloud of smoke.

He said that they heard about three or four explosions, but the last one shook his house.

Were you injured in an explosion or fire?

The chemical explosion at DrillChem highlights the fact that chemical and industrial plants are at risk of a explosions and deadly fires.

When gases, built-up heat and a chemical reaction leads to explosions, the result can be serious and debilitating injuries, such as burns and lung problems that can affect workers and the local community.

If you were injured as a result of an explosion, or another workplace accident, you should contact a Plano personal injury attorney from The Zendeh Del Law Firm to discuss filing a claim for compensation.
