On Monday, Aug. 10, security footage at Toyota of Plano on Preston Road
captured a fair haired man in a blue shirt and jeans stealing a customer’s
vehicle as the owner was inside the dealership.
Plano Police Officer David Tilley said that the owner of the Corolla brought
her vehicle to the dealership for servicing. She left her car door open
with her keys inside as she went inside the office to speak to a service
advisor. The incident occurred around 9 a.m. and only lasted about 15 seconds.
The security footage released by Plano police shows a man in a blue shirt
walking out of the dealership’s service office. He approaches the
Corolla, steps inside the vehicle and drives away.
It’s unclear whether it was a crime of opportunity, or if the man
was inside the dealership, waiting for the right chance to steal a vehicle.
Officer Tilley said that investigators determined that the man in the
blue shirt did not have a service appointment, nor was he there to pick
up his vehicle.
Tilley told the
Plano Star Courier that if you’re going to take any vehicle to any service company,
to take your keys, lock your doors, and go in and check in with a service advisor.
Auto Theft in Texas
According to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, all cars are a potential
target for theft. The TxDMV reports that nearly 65,000 cars and trucks
are stolen in the state each year, and thousands more are burglarized.
Of all vehicles stolen, almost half of them had the keys left inside.
The top 5 stolen vehicles stolen in 2013 were: 1) Ford pickup, 2) Chevrolet
pickup, 3) Dodge pickup, 4) Chevrolet Tahoe, and 5) Honda Civic. (TxDPS MVT19 Report)
In Texas, auto theft falls under the state’s
theft statutes. Under Sec. 31.03, theft is a state jail felony if the property
stolen was valued $1,500 or more, but less than $20,000. If the property
stolen was worth $20,000 or more, but less than $100,000, it’s a
felony of the third degree.
