A former Plano neurosurgeon accused of maiming several patients and killing
at least two others between July 2012 and June 2013 has been arrested.
C. Duntsch, 44, of Centennial, Colo., was arrested and booked into the
Dallas County Jail on Tuesday afternoon and is being held in lieu of $600,000 bail.
Duntsch is charged with one count of injury to a child, elderly or disabled
person, and five counts of aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury.
Duntsch performed numerous spinal surgeries at Baylor Regional Medical
Center at Plano. He’s accused of maiming several patients and killing
at least two others.
Duntsch’s license was suspended in June 2013. The Texas Medical Board
noted multiple flaws in the surgeon’s methods, including a pattern
of failing to follow the appropriate planning standards before operating,
failing to recognize and respond to complications during and after surgical
procedures, and putting his patients at risk, which ultimately led to
at least two deaths.
In December 2013, the board took it a step further and revoked his license
to practice, noting that he violated the standard of care for six of his patients.
Last year, Duntsch told
The Dallas Morning News that 99 percent of everything said about him was completely false. He
claimed that he was a victim of rival surgeons, misunderstandings, and
personal injury attorneys.
Three federal suits were filed against Baylor Plano, accusing the Center
of putting profits above patient safety. Two of Duntsch’s patients
claim that his surgeries harmed them, and a third says that she suffered
nerve damage due to a surgery he performed at Dallas Medical Center.
The lawsuits allege that Baylor was aware that Duntsch was a dangerous
doctor but did nothing to stop him from performing back surgery.
