Just before 2:00 a.m. on July 26, a
traffic accident in Plano left one teenager dead. The accident occurred at the intersection
of northbound Preston Road and Tennyson Parkway.
A. Baker III, 18, was driving a 2002 silver Chevy Tahoe in the left lane,
but before reaching the intersection, the SUV suddenly veered to the far
right, ran over a curb and crashed into a large light pole before bursting
According to Officer David Tilley, Plano Police Department spokesman, witnesses
came to the rescue and were able to get the passenger, D. Mushock, 18,
out of the vehicle, but unfortunately they weren’t able to save
Baker before the Tahoe was fully engulfed in flames.
The driver of the Tahoe was pronounced dead when authorities arrived at
Y. Gebremicael, a friend of the teens in the Tahoe, was driving behind
the SUV when it veered off the road. The quick reaction of Gebremicael
and five other witnesses probably saved Mushock’s life.
Gebremicael was called a hero at a vigil held Monday for Baker and online.
On Twitter, B. Perkkins said that it takes an unimaginable amount of courage
to reach into a burning vehicle and save another person’s life.
Speaking at the vigil, Mushock’s father thanked the community and
Gebremicael for saving his son. He called Gebremicael a hero, and said
that he knew he tried hard to save both boys. He said he was forever in
his debt. That he saved his son and risked his own life.
Since the accident, Mushock has had two surgeries for a broken back and
fractured femur. He was also significantly burned and lost a tooth in
the accident, the
Plano Star Courier reported.
Mushock’s father cautioned others not to
drink and drive, not to smoke and drive, and not to
text and drive –to get home alive.
According to the accident report, speeding, the failure to drive in a single
lane, and faulty evasive action were contributing factors to the accident.
The toxicology results have yet to be released.
Tilley said that they’re investigating why the SUV left the roadway,
and whether alcohol, texting, falling asleep at the wheel, or just not
paying attention caused the accident.
