On Jan. 11, officials from Mothers Against Drunk Driving launched an online
petition demanding that Ethan Couch – a North Texas teen who used
the “affluenza” defense after killing four people in a drunk
driving crash – be tried in adult court.
MADD is asking the public for 30,000 signatures demanding that his case
be moved from juvenile court to adult court before his Jan. 19 hearing.
In the petition, officials from MADD said that they, along with millions
of others were outraged when a judge sentenced Couch to rehab and 10 years’
probation after the defense successfully argued that he was “too
rich” to understand he was in the wrong, also known as the “affluenza” defense.
Couch fled the country to Mexico with his mother while on probation after
a video of him appearing to drink alcohol at a party surfaced, which was
a violation of his probation.
MADD National President Colleen Sheehey-Church, whose son was killed by
an underage drunk and drugged driver said that everything possible must
be done to hold Couch accountable and to ensure that he has no more victims.
Sheehey-Church said that Couch is not a child and his actions are not that
of a child. In MADD’s
news release, she said four people were killed and several injured, and he continues
to show no remorse and blatant disregard for the law.
MADD is trying to collect 30,000 signatures by Jan. 19. This way the organization
can provide them to the prosecution before Couche’s transfer hearing
in Tarrant County, Texas.
MADD contends that transferring Couch to adult court would give the criminal
justice system the opportunity to hold him accountable and would ensure
that his probation extends beyond his 19th birthday in April 2016.
