16 Arrested in East Texas Drug Ring Case

Federal prosecutors say that at least 16 people have been arrested in connection with an investigation in an East Texas drug trafficking ring. The drug traffickers had ties with drug manufacturers in Mexico, and were distributing the narcotics throughout the state of Texas and other states within the U.S. The arrests that began on Tuesday involve defendants from Tyler, Longview, Dallas, Irving, and Houston. The indictment returned last month charges all suspects with the conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, marijuana, and cocaine.

The officers from law enforcement agencies in the area have seized the drugs, weapons, and vehicles and more than $158,000 since the investigation began in 2012. The defendants may get life in prison if they are convicted of their crimes. Drug penalties can be very serious, especially if the suspect has been in the drug trade for an extended amount of time.

Recently, a man in South Texas was issued four life sentences for running another drug trafficking organization that moved cocaine and marijuana to dozens of states. The convicted criminal had a long history of drug abuse. He had been convicted on 17 counts spread across two indictments, and had a total of six felony convictions.

The individual used commercial freight lines to run drugs and had cash proceeds deposited into various accounts and then withdrawn in Brownsville. There were eleven co-defendants in this case as well and all pleaded guilty and will be punished for their crimes.
