MDMA Death at Austin City Limits

MDMA Death at Austin City Limits

Austin is known for its vibrant music scene, and thousands swarm into the city for the renowned Austin City Limits music festival. But for one of the music-lovers at the event, getting caught up in the moment highlighted the importance of being aware of drugs involving MDMA, known as Molly.

Side Effects from Molly Led to Woman's Death

The young woman attended the music festival with friends and took a form of the drug ecstasy known as Molly. After experiencing a side effect from the drug, her friends contacted a police officer. The officer noticed that the woman was sweating profusely, flailing her arms and legs, and had a gray complexion. CPR was performed on the women before she was taken to the hospital. After being admitted to the hospital, her health deteriorated and she died a few days later.

Some of her friends said they all experienced negative side effects after taking Molly, but only one other friend needed to be hospitalized. The young woman was the only one that experienced such a negative reaction to the drug.

Illegal Drugs Have Legal Consequences

Molly is often taken at music festivals, as the drug can cause increased energy, euphoria, emotional warmth, and sensory and time distortions. It is generally taken as a tablet and the effects will last between three to six hours.

As Molly and other derivatives of ecstasy become more common, it is important that the laws surrounding the drug in Texas are known. Even possession of molly can carry:

  • 180 days to 2 years in county jail and a $10,000 fine for less than 1 gram
  • 2 years to 10 years in jail time and a $10,000 for 1 to 4 grams
  • 2 year to 20 years in jail and $10,000 for possession of 4 to 400 grams
  • 5 years to life in prison for amounts over 400 grams

When a person may possess Molly with the intent to distribute or manufacture, the punishments become even stricter.

The legality surrounding Molly and other ecstasy related drugs is not necessarily reflective of its popularity and usage in Texas, especially at festivals. Our firm knows that even possession carries strict consequences, and our attorneys can be there to aggressively fight for you if you have been charged with a drug crime.
