Causes of Truck Accidents

Have you, or someone you love been involved in a trucking accident? Semi-trucks and eighteen-wheelers are massive, and when something such as truck driver negligence, or a road condition causes a problem, it can spell disaster for the motorists in the truck’s path of destruction.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2013, approximately 95,000 people were injured in large truck crashes, and another 3,964 were killed. The NHTSA reports that in 2013, of all of the states, Texas had the highest number of large trucks involved in fatal accidents at 493.

What causes truck accidents?

The leading cause of truck accidents is truck driver error. According to a recent study released by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), truck driver error was ten times more likely to be the cause of an accident than any other factor, such as weather or road conditions.

The FMCSA cites action or inaction by the truck driver as the cause for 88% of truck accidents. What factors contributed to driver error?

Driver distraction, unfamiliarity with the road, under the influence of prescription and over-the-counter drugs (causing sleepiness), driver fatigue, inattention, speeding, driver fatigue, and sleep deprivation.

Equipment Failures Cause Accidents Too

While driver error tops the list of causes of truck accidents, the second leading cause is equipment failure, which often happens when a truck isn’t properly maintained – an act of negligence in itself.

Examples of equipment failures:

  • Tire blowouts
  • Transmission failure
  • Brake failure
  • Either removing or depowering the front breaks (can cause a jackknife accident)
  • Improperly secured load (causing rollover)
  • Overloaded truck (can cause a rollover)
  • Steering failure
  • Trailer not attached properly
