New Texas Law Targets Synthetic Marijuana

New Texas Law Targets Synthetic Marijuana

On Tuesday, nearly 700 new laws took effect in Texas, one of which was the state’s first step towards easing the limits on medical marijuana. That measure is allowing some epilepsy patients to get low-THC cannabis oil.

In contrast, the state is increasing its restrictions on synthetic forms of the drug, widely known as “K2” or “Spice.”

The newest law in the fight against synthetic marijuana went into effect Tuesday, which expands the provisions of the Texas Controlled Substance Act, banning 1,000 compounds used to make synthetic marijuana.

Ronnie Cloud of the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office narcotics unit said that it will help in the prosecution, that there’s no question. But he believes that users and manufacturers will still find a way.

K2 is made of herbs and spices sprayed with a synthetic compound chemically similar to THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana.

The new law was enacted as reports of K2 exposures are increasing statewide. In 2013, the Texas Poison Center reported 464 exposures to K2, and in 2014 that number increased to 782.

Dr. Eric Wish, the director of the Coordinating Center for the National Institute on Drug Abuse said that their research shows that people are playing Russian roulette with their lives.

Synthetic marijuana is known by many street names, including: Spice, K2, Black Mamba Bliss, Weed, No More Mr. Nice Guy, etc.

K2 arrests have made the headlines in Fort Worth in recent years. For instance, in May, the owners of the Gas Pipe Head Shop chain were arrested on federal charges of conspiring to sell synthetic marijuana.

Synthetic marijuana is becoming increasingly popular among the younger crowds. Many people who have smoke real marijuana have tried synthetic marijuana.
