About Social Security Disability Payments

When do SSDI payments start?

According to the law, a person cannot start receiving SSDI payments until they have been disabled for at least five (5) months. Usually, the recipient receives their first SDDI payment with the sixth month of their disability.

How long will I get to receive benefits?

Per the Social Security Administration (SSA), a disabled person receives disability benefits so long as their medical condition has not improved and they are not able to work. However, that does not mean that disability benefits last indefinitely.

Due to advances in medicine and rehabilitation, many people who go on disability eventually recover enough that they can return to work. If you are approved for disability you are responsible for keeping the SSA updated on any improvements in your medical condition; you must notify the SSA if you heal enough that you can return to work, and you must let them know if you go back to work.

How often will I receive benefits?

The SSA pays Social Security Disability benefits once a month. The way it works is you will receive benefits each month on your birth date. So, if your birthday is February 14th, you will get paid on the 14th of each month. If you receive benefits on someone else’s record, such as your spouse, you would receive benefits on your spouse’s birth date as opposed to yours.

Will I receive a check in the mail?

No, the SSA does not mail out checks to new applicants; you will receive your SSDI benefits electronically. The SSA contends that direct deposit is a safe and secure way to receive your benefits. To set this up, you can contact the SSA directly, or you can contact your own banking institution.
