Obtaining a Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC)

Are you interested in obtaining a Texas License to Carry a Handgun (LTC)? If so, the requirements for an LTC are covered under the Texas Government Code Chapter 411, Subchapter H. Under the Code, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must be at least 21 years-of-age unless you are active duty military.
  • You must meet the federal qualifications to purchase a handgun.
  • You cannot be charged with a Class A or B misdemeanor.
  • In the past five years, you have not been convicted of a Class A or B misdemeanor.
  • You must submit a complete application.
  • You must pay the required fees.
  • You must complete the required training.
  • You have NOT been found delinquent in child support collected or handled by the Attorney General.
  • You have not been found delinquent in tax payments by any agency of the State of Texas.

If you’re interested in obtaining an LTC, be aware that not everyone qualifies. Various factors could disqualify you from obtaining an LTC, such as having a felony conviction, being convicted of certain misdemeanor offenses, being addicted to drugs or alcohol, having a severe mental illness, and being subject to a family violence restraining order among others. Applying for an LTC

If you’re applying for your first LTC, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) advises to submit an application online. Once you’ve done that, schedule an appointment so you can be fingerprinted. Before you can obtain an LTC, you must complete four to six hours of classroom instruction. You will also have to pass a written exam and a proficiency demonstration, which involves actual shooting.
