To qualify for disability benefits, you need two things: 1) you need to have worked long enough to qualify, which is usually 10 years, and 2) you need to have a medical condition that meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of a disability. Meaning, your medical condition must be serious enough that you cannot work and it must last at least one year or it’s expected to end in death.

Can I go back to work while receiving disability benefits? Yes, it is possible to return to work while receiving disability benefits. The SSA has special rules to help people get back to work without jeopardizing their initial benefits. It’s possible for people to have a nine-month trial work period to test if they’re able to work.

How long will it take to get a decision about my disability application? The timeline depends on the nature of the disability, how quickly the SSA can get medical evidence from your doctor and other medical sources, whether you’ll need a medical examination, and if your application needs to be reviewed for quality purposes. Are Social Security Disability benefits retroactive at all? The SSA may pay disability benefits as far back as 12 months before the individual applied, that is if the SSA determines the person was disabled during that time and they’ve met all other requirements.
