Google Map API Key TutorialAs a Texas resident, you’re probably familiar with the term “Adult Probation,” as a sentencing alternative, but now it goes by a different name – Community Supervision. What is Community Supervision exactly? It’s an alternative to being behind bars and it allows offenders to earn a living, support their families, make amends to those they have trespassed against, and take part in rehabilitative services.
Here are some facts about Community Supervision and why it’s a favorable alternative to being incarcerated:
Fact #1: It’s a popular form of punishment.
Across the United States, Community Supervision is the most commonly-used form of punishment by judges and magistrates. It’s a favorable alternative to incarceration because it enables to offenders to remain at home with their loved ones where they belong.
Fact #2: Not all offenders qualify.
Not just anybody can receive Community Supervision. If someone is considered a threat to society or if the courts are afraid they cannot safely monitor the individual in the community, the offender may not qualify. If an offender is a dangerous criminal and poses a threat to the community, he or she is unlikely to receive Community Supervision.
Fact #3: The goal is to STOP the cycle of crime.
The ultimate objective of Community Supervision is to rehabilitate criminals and STOP the vicious cycle of crime. This is accomplished through education and counseling, which is meant to help offenders before they escalate to committing violent crimes.
Fact #4: Community Supervision saves taxpayers money.
The United States’ prison population has grown exponentially in recent years, placing a major economic burden on taxpayers in regards to building, staffing, operating and maintaining prisons. By placing non-violent offenders on Community Supervision, taxpayers save money and we have more room to house the violent offenders who need to be kept behind bars and away from the community.
