Who Qualifies for SSI Benefits?

SSI eligibility rests on two requirements: financial need and a qualifying status. Every applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national, or fall within certain eligible alien categories. You must also meet at least one of the following: be blind, be disabled, or be 65 years of age or older. Financial qualification requires both limited income and limited resources. The SSA has historically set the individual resource limit at $2,000, though these figures are subject to legislative change, and you should confirm current limits directly with the Social Security Administration.

For adults, the SSA defines disability as a physical or mental impairment that is medically determinable and prevents engagement in substantial gainful activity. The condition must either be expected to result in death or must have lasted, or be expected to last, at least 12 continuous months. SSI also covers blind or disabled children whose families meet the income and resource criteria.

After submission, a state Disability Determination Services office takes over. A disability examiner gathers medical records and reviews them against the SSA’s definition of disability, and may contact your physicians, hospitals, clinics, and personal contacts directly. When evidence is insufficient, DDS may schedule an additional medical examination at its own expense. Initial decisions can take several months depending on how quickly records are received and the complexity of the case.
