Normally, individuals think of pickpockets as poor individuals in large cities. Yet one pickpocket ion Texas was doing the unexpected, taking from individual’s wallets and purses while they dined at an upscale restaurant in the Houston area. According to ABC News, this man snuck into a steakhouse in the Katy area and would take wallets out of the purses that were left on the ground or on the back of the chair during the meal.
This Texas pickpocket is currently on the police’s wanted list. Staff members at the steakhouse say that they became suspicious when they noticed a suspect lurking behind customers at the restaurant. When the staff looked at surveillance video later, they learned that the suspect lifted a wallet out of a purse as he was putting on his jacket. The suspect is described as a black male that is in his late 30’s or early 40’s. The staff confronted this suspect and he then pushed them out of the way and fled the restaurant.
Pickpocketing is considered a theft crime. Most of the time, pickpocketing is petty theft. It is considered a Class C misdemeanor if the suspect takes less than $50. This means that the offender will normally need to reimburse the victim and then pay a fine of up to $500. If an individual steals between $50 and $500 in Texas, this is categorized as a Class B misdemeanor and will result in up to 180 days in the county jail and a fine up to $2,000.
Whenever a person steals more than $500 and less than $1,500, this is a Class A misdemeanor that can lead to a year in county jail and a fine of up to $4,000. Once the individual steals more than $1,000 less than $20,000 it is considered a third-degree felony and that individual will spend between 180 days and two years in a state jail or prison.
