Why Should I Have a US Passport?

Planning a trip overseas, whether it’s for work or pleasure can be exciting. You get to shop for clothing for the trip, exchange your US dollars for foreign currency, plan to take loads of pictures to share on Facebook and Instagram, and of course, arriving at your destination is the best part. But, before you can travel abroad, you have to get that little book called a US passport. Without it, you’ll be stuck at the airport with nowhere to go but home. Last-minute trips abroad are not realistic without a passport. So, if you’re ever surprised by a significant other, a boss, or a close friend with tickets to someplace magical, like a European getaway, or a cruise, you’ll want to have a passport on-hand. Otherwise, they may have to get someone else with a passport to take your place. A lot goes into planning a trip abroad and the last thing you want is to find out you can’t go because your passport doesn’t arrive on time. Our advice is to get yourself a passport ASAP – even if you don’t have a single vacation plan at this point in time.

Reasons Why You Need a Passport

Here are 6 reasons why you should get a passport:

  1. If you lose your driver license, with a passport, you have a backup form of photo ID that is acceptable by just about everyone. It’s as reliable as a driver license as far as photo IDs are concerned.
  2. You can pick up and fly out of the country last minute. If you get a passport now, you’ll always be prepared to travel abroad.
  3. You’ll save money. When you get a passport when you’re not in a hurry, it costs less. Currently, the application fee is $110 and the execution (acceptance) fee is $35, but if you need your application to be expedited, it’ll cost you an additional $60. And if you need one because it’s an emergency, it’s likely to cost more. So, to save money on passport fees, get one before you need it.
  4. With a passport, you always have proof that you’re a US citizen. If anyone questions your citizenship, just whip out your passport and it’s done.
  5. With a passport, you instantly gain access to about 172 countries.
  6. If you are a parent, it’s a good idea to get your kids passports too. They are reliable forms of identification and can usually be used to enroll children in public schools, but of course, check with the school before you try this.
