Worldwide Caution for U.S. Travelers

Are you a U.S. citizen who is planning to travel abroad? If so, it’s important to stay updated on the U.S. Department of State’s “Worldwide Caution,” which provides U.S. citizens with updated information about threats on foreign soil. The Department of State updated the Worldwide Caution “with information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions, political violence, and criminal activity against U.S. citizens and interests abroad.” The reason for this update is the U.S. government is concerned about the welfare of U.S. citizens as they travel overseas. Since terrorist attacks and political upheaval take place throughout the world and often without warning, U.S. citizens are strongly urged to be vigilant when travelling abroad, especially in certain countries. If you are planning a trip abroad, you want to be fully prepared for an emergency. The Department of State urges you to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive security messages about natural disasters, terrorist threats, and other security concerns. You are also urged to go to travel.state.gov and read the following:

Stay Aware of Terrorist Threats

We’re not trying to instill fear in you, but it is important to remain realistic when travelling to countries where terrorist threats are concerns. “Terrorist groups including ISIS, al-Qa’ida, their associates, and those inspired by such organizations, are intent on attacking U.S. citizens wherever they are,” says the Department of State. The Department of State warns travelers that extremists and terrorists are attacking people in the following places: schools, parks, shopping malls, markets, airports, hotels, clubs, restaurants, and other public places where people gather. “Private U.S. citizens should not travel to any country to participate in armed conflict,” says the Department of State. Some of the more dangerous countries at this point in time include: East Asia and Pacific, Turkey, Ukraine, North Africa, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and many others.
