According to the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD), “The use of alcohol and drugs can negatively affect all aspects of a person’s life, impact their family, friends and community, and place an enormous burden on American society.” The NCADD goes on to say, “One of the most significant areas of risk with the use of alcohol and drugs is the connection between alcohol, drugs and crime.” Drugs and alcohol are involved in about 80 percent of criminal offenses that lead to incarceration in the United States, according to the NCADD. They’re implicated in crimes, such as driving while intoxicated, family violence, and crimes against property among many others.
How Big is the Problem?
Not only does America have a major problem with overpopulated prisons, a large portion of the inmates are in prison as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. The NCADD reports the following:
- 80 percent of inmates admit to abusing drugs or alcohol.
- Of America’s inmates, almost 50 percent are clinically addicted.
- Around 60 percent of people arrested in the U.S. test positive for one or more illegal drugs.
“Alcohol is a factor in 40% of all violent crimes today, and according to the Department of Justice, 37% of almost 2 million convicted offenders currently in jail, report that they were drinking at the time of their arrest,” reports the NCADD. Those who are addicted to drugs are more likely to commit theft-related crimes, such as shoplifting, robbery and burglary – crimes that have to do with getting cash to feed the abuser’s habit. “There are also close links between drug use and women, men and children who are involved in, or exploited by, the sex trade,” says the NCADD.
